Li Wei Zhao

25 - Trans Male - Venetian - Bartender - LGBTQ Influencer
the life of a transgender chinese boy.

Hai Rong Zhao was born in Chengdu, China along with her twin sister on July 29, 1997. Things weren’t easy for the girls’ parents, even at such a young age. Because of how strict the child law was in China at the time, with one daughter, they would have not had the opportunity to have a male child with two daughters. They tried and succeeded, and in turn gave up both twins for adoption, choosing the male child over both of them. That was the way most of China was at that time, since wanting a son was still highly prevalent. Both girls were adopted across the seas by a Chinese family and started to live their life in Seattle, Washington. Because they were both young, learning English was easy for them, as they grew up bilingual. When Hai Rong hit puberty, things got a little complicated for her. She felt misplaced, and not in the right skin. She had grown up most of her life living as a tomboy, and she thought that would suffice for the rest of her life, but it soon got less and less fulfilling. It started first with people she didn’t know, but Hai Rong soon became Li Wei - a trans male by identity. Once the siblings went to high school, things became even more difficult. Li Wei was bullied, not just for being a trans male, but a weak one at that. He didn’t fit in with the girls, and he didn’t fit in with the boys either. At least not here. He thought this was going to be his life forever - being bullied, covering up the scars, and hiding from his parents.
Li Wei’s fears were answered when his parents confronted him during his senior year of high school. His sister was with him for support as he explained how he felt and the need to change, but his father was hardly accepting. His mother, who was a little more sympathetic, consoled the two siblings. Although both were not accepting of their lifestyle, they didn’t give up on them, loving them regardless of what gender they chose to be or how they chose to live their life. It was a clear ticket out of there for Li Wei when both of them graduated and got accepted to a university in Las Vegas. After moving out there at 18 and spending two years in university, Li Wei realized it wasn’t for him. He finished his degree in political sciences which he struggled to do, but he didn’t want his parents' money to be thrown down the drain. Life in Vegas was an entirely new world to him - it was a world where he could fit in. He started working off jobs in the casinos and amusement parks, but he finally landed a bartending job at 22 at one of the best gay bars in the area - Phoenix Bar and Lounge. He has been with the bar for over three years now, and in that time he has found a social media presence in the LGBTQ community. He is involved with support rallies and anything to help spread love and acceptance.
